MANGHAM, La. — It was a tale of two games Friday night for the Concordia 12-year-old All-Stars in the championship round of the district tournament against Morehouse.

In the first game, Cole Cangemi pitched a two-hitter while Jake Barlow and Jake Cooper each hit home runs as Concordia rolled past Morehouse 11-1.

Cangemi pitched a complete game, striking out 12 batters while walking four batters. After allowing one run in the top of the first inning, Cangemi threw five straight scoreless innings.

“The only time they had any base runners on was when we walked someone,” Concordia 12-year-old All-Stars coach Whest Shirley said.

Barlow gave Concordia the lead for good with his two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Cooper, who went 2-for-3, hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tyler Cothern went 3-for-3 and Cangemi had a double.

Concordia had nine hits and committed no errors in the first game. And that was a game it had to win to force a second and decisive championship game as Morehouse was undefeated heading into the finals.

And Game 2 was completely dominated by Morehouse. Tristan Shanks pitched a one-hitter and Morehouse scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 16-0 win in just four innings.

“Just good pitching. He just shut us down. We just couldn’t pick up his fastball and his curveball was the same speed,” Shirley said.

Even though Morehouse was ahead 5-0 after two innings of play, Concordia had committed just one error. It was during the bottom of the third when Morehouse really put the pressure on Concordia’s defense as it committed six errors.

“Our defense fell apart,” Shirley said.

Dollar Ridgell, who was 2-for-2, hit a grand slam home run and Drake Williams added a two-run shot for Morehouse in the bottom of the third inning

Dee Pates and Garrett Morris both went 2-for-2 with a triple, Michael Logan had a double, and Jerry Powell was 2-for-2 to lead Morehouse.

“We showed up for the first game and they showed up for the second game. They’re the district champs,” Shirley said.

The Concordia 12-year-old All-Stars will next play in the Southern Regional Tournament in Metairie, La., beginning next Friday. Morehouse will be playing in the Northern Regional Tournament in West Monroe, La.

“There’s 16 districts. The South will have four No. 1s and four No. 2s. The North will have four No. 1s and four No. 2s,” Shirley said.
