Man dies in Saturday accident

VIDALIA — A 77-year-old Vidalia man died in a wreck Saturday afternoon.

Vidalia Police Chief Ronnie G. “Tapper” Hendricks said the wreck on Carter Street in which Joe Mays died was under investigation. Mays was a fine man, Hendricks said.

“I loved him to death,” Hendricks said. “He was a sweet man, and I will greatly miss him. A lot of people in the community will miss him.

“He and his wife had been through 52 years of marriage, so you can understand what the family is going through.”

Hendricks said he was calling in the Louisiana State Police to reconstruct the scene, and the Vidalia Police Department would release more details as the investigation turns up evidence.

Hendricks would not release any more details at this point in the investigation.
