Softball roundups: WCCA stepping up big

WOODVILLE — Probably the most pleasant surprise in MAIS District 5-AA this season has been the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams.
Especially considering that Centreville Academy and Silliman Institute have been the top teams and have battled for the district title in recent years. But with Silliman struggling this year, WCCA has stepped up in a big way.
That continued Monday afternoon as Bethany Fletcher had a complete-game performance on the mound and Caroline Walker had a solid outing at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double as WCCA rolled to a 7-1 win over the Central Private School Lady Rebels.
“I’m proud of the way the team is playing,” WCCA first-year head coach Ray McDaniel said. “We’re hitting the ball real well right now.”
Fletcher pitched all seven innings for the Lady Rams and McDaniel noted that she’s getting better with each outing.
“She was in control the whole game. Seems like the more she pitches, the stronger she’s getting as the season goes on,” McDaniel said.
WCCA (7-4, 3-1) will travel to Amite, La., to take on Oak Forest Academy in a make-up game on Thursday with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7:15 p.m. The two teams were originally scheduled to face each other on Aug. 6, but the JV and varsity games were rained out.
However, the Lady Rams will not participate in the Parklane Academy Tournament on Saturday.
Centreville-Silliman game postponed
CLINTON, La. — What was a good game between the Centreville Academy Lady Tigers and the Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats in MAIS District 5-AA action late Monday afternoon will have to be concluded later this week.
That’s because inclement weather forced the game to be halted with the score tied at 0-0 with nobody on and one out in the top of the fourth inning. Centreville head coach Mark Mann said the game will resume Wednesday at either 6:30 or 7 p.m.
Centreville, which went 3-2 at the Silliman Tournament last Saturday to improve its overall record to 13-5, hosts Class AAA Parklane Academy today with the JV game at 6 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:15 p.m.
