Prep softball roundups: Trinity rolls to 16-4 win against Tensas Academy

ST. JOSEPH, La. — Mallory Lancaster hit two of Trinity Episcopal’s five doubles which brought in three runs as the Lady Saints rolled to a 16-4 win over the Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Trinity Episcopal reached the .500 mark in its overall record for the first time season and stayed undefeated in MAIS District 6-A. The Lady Saints are now 6-6 overall and 2-0 in district play.
One of the many things head coach Chris Hutchins said he was happy about was that the Lady Saints scored in all five innings. And not only that, they scored no fewer than two runs in any of those innings.
“We were consistently aggressive at the plate and we were rewarded by scoring a lot of runs,” Hutchins said.
Randa Morace started the scoring onslaught with a two-run double in the top of the first inning. After Tensas Academy got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first, Trinity Episcopal (6-6, 2-0) started to methodically put the game away by scoring three runs in the top of the second.
Caitlyn Upton then brought in two of Trinity’s three runs in the top of the third inning with the team’s second double of the game to give the Lady Saints an 8-1 lead. The Lady Chiefs tried to get back in the game after scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the third, but the Lady Saints would not let that happen.
Lancaster and Ashleigh Williams each had an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning as Trinity made it a 10-4 ball game. Then in the top of the fifth, the Lady Saints put the finishing touches on its blowout win by scoring six runs. The big blow was Lancaster’s two-run double.
“I was very pleased with our effort (today),” Hutchins said. “It was a complete game with all three facets of the game working for us – pitching, defensively and offensively.”
Upton as well as Julia Stevens each went 2-for-2 while Lancaster went 2-for-3 and Morace was 2-for-4 as Trinity belted out 11 hits.
Katie Steele was the winning pitcher as she allowed four runs on six hits, walked three and struck out two. And the defense behind her was solid with just two errors.
Only one of Tensas Academy’s six hits went for extra bases – a double by Brittany Bamburg.
“Our defense did a really good job of supporting Katie and Katie did a good job of throwing a lot of strikes,” Hutchins said.
Trinity Episcopal plays again on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Tallulah Academy. The varsity game starts at 3:30 p.m. and the junior varsity game will follow at 5 p.m.
Brookhaven 6, Franklin County 2
MEADVILLE — Just when Franklin County’s slow-pitch softball team was playing better defense and hitting the ball well, both of those broke down in a big way as the Lady Bulldogs fell to Brookhaven 6-2 Monday night.
Despite having a young team this season, Franklin County had started to cut down on its errors and was getting timely hitting in wins at Brookhaven last Thursday and at McComb on Monday.
But in the rematch with the Lady Panthers at home (which was postponed because of heavy rain two weeks ago), the Lady Bulldogs once again played like they did early in the season.
Franklin County (5-3) committed five errors, three of which allowed Brookhaven, last year’s Class 5A state runner-up, to score four runs.
“Three of the five errors were outfielder errors. Those three errors cost four runs,” Franklin County head coach Dana Smith. “Without those errors, it’s a 2-2 game.”
Brookhaven scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but Lady Bulldogs pitcher Mildred Starks kept the Lady Panthers scoreless for the next five innings. However, Lady Panthers pitcher Brooke Hosick made sure Franklin County would not rally in this game.
Hosick gave up one run in the bottom of the first inning and like Starks, pitched five consecutive scoreless innings to keep Brookhaven’s lead at 3-1.
The Lady Panthers put the game away by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh for a 6-1 lead. The Lady Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but they were unable to put up a rally.
“You can’t expect to score two runs and win against Brookhaven,” Smith said. “We didn’t base hit the ball like we have the last two games.”
The two teams combined for 24 hits in the game with Brookhaven finishing with 13 hits while Franklin County had 11 hits. However, the Lady Panthers had four doubles while only one of the Lady Bulldogs’ hits went for extra bases – a double by Destiney Dedeaux.
Emily Cothren went 3-for-3 while Allison Hauer and Toni Robinson each went 2-for-3.
Franklin County visits Bogue Chitto on Thursday with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
