McCOMB — Franklin County was held to just 104 yards rushing as it fell to McComb High School 33-14 Friday.
Although the Bulldogs got the first touchdown of the game, they only managed one more after that. Head coach Ricky O’Quinn said penalties sucked the momentum out of his team early in the game.
“We got a lot of penalties early, and that swung the momentum in their favor. We got an interception return for a touchdown called back on a late hit on their quarterback,” O’Quinn said.
Franklin County’s Milton Griffin had just 36 yards rushing on seven carries, but added 71 yards passing on two completions.
“He did pretty well for us. They were kind of keying in on him, so he didn’t do all that he was capable of. He also had a hamstring injury that kind of slowed him down in the second half, but he’s OK,” O’Quinn said.
Calvin Robinson got the Bulldogs on the board with a 65-yard touchdown catch with 10:17 left in the third quarter. McComb answered with a 25-yard touchdown reception by Quatavious Smith.
In the second quarter, two touchdown runs of 74 and 20 yards by Deontay Evans extended McComb’s lead to 18-7 at the half.
Kevontay Dillon scored McComb’s final touchdown with 3:50 to go in the fourth on a 30-yard catch. Franklin County’s Jadarius Davis connected with Derrick Bethley on a 13-yard touchdown pass to score the Bulldogs’ second touchdown with 2:19 left.
“It was a tough loss,” O’Quinn said. “We’re trying to compete for a 3A state championship. We have a resilient bunch, and we’re not going to go to the drawing board and start over.”
