Lady Bulldogs hang on to win against McComb

BUDE — Destiney Dedeaux had a two-run single during a four-run rally in the bottom of the third inning as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs held on for a 5-3 win over the McComb Lady Tigers Tuesday night.

Franklin County took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning. But when the inning was over, the Lady Bulldogs had a 5-0 advantage.

Toni Robinson started it off with a leadoff single. She went to second when Lay Lay Griffin walked and later scored when KeKe Collins reached first base on an error.

Then Dedeaux came through with her single that brought in Griffin and Collins.

Winning pitcher Mildred Starks singled, but Dedeaux was thrown out.

Kenyatta Hunt reached on a walk. Abby Graves hit a sacrifice fly that scored Starks.

“We had a couple of bobbles that went our way, but we had several hits that were back-to-back,” Franklin County head coach Dana Smith said.

Griffin went 2-for-2 while Robinson and Starks each went 2-for-3 as the Lady Bulldogs finished with 13 hits in the game.

McComb didn’t score its first run until the top of the fifth inning, but the Lady Tigers wouldn’t go away quietly. They scored two runs in the top of the sixth, one on a double by Victoria Price to make it a 5-3 game.

But Starks shut the door on McComb in the top of the seventh to end the game. Starks allowed three runs on seven hits.

“Mildred did an excellent job tonight. This was probably one of her best outings,” Smith said.

Franklin County (6-4) begins Region 7-3A play Thursday went it travels to Columbia to face West Marion.

The junior varsity game starts at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
