Be safe, not sorry; get prepared now

So far so good may be good enough for now, but not later.
No hurricane has focused its eye on the Mississippi or Louisiana coasts this season, and for that, we are thankful.
The area has certainly seen plenty of storms in recent years and no one will complain about the break.
The remnants of Tropical Storm Gaston have fallen apart completely, and the National Weather Service predicts a zero percent chance they will reform.
Igor is developing on the other side of the Atlantic, but it sits far enough away that there is no sense in worrying yet.
But area residents can’t let this streak of hurricane-free living go to their heads.
Our area is very much in danger of high winds, rain and power outages if another Katrina or Gustav forms in the Gulf.
We’ve lived life with no electricity, and we know preparation is key. But it’s sometimes difficult to get ready when there is no storm looming large.
Of course, now is the best time to prepare.
Every house should have extra flashlights, batteries, food with a long shelf life and a plan to cook it and bottled water. Others may want to invest in generators.
Hurricane season — though it’s been quiet so far — is still upon us. Use this time to get ready and leave the last flashlight on the store shelf for that procrastinator down the street.
