CENTRAL, La. — The Adams County Christian Lady Rebels were on the winning end of a shutout Thursday as they defeated Central Private School 8-0 in an MAIS District 5-AA game.

Sanders had a perfect game through 4 1/3 innings before A. Wicker broke it up with a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sanders struck out five and walked just one in a complete-game performance to pick up the win.

“She hit her spots extremely well, but we had some good defense behind her,” ACCS head coach Forrest Foster said. “The girls came out focused and ready to play and it showed.”

Wicker actually hit a single in the bottom of the second inning, but was thrown out trying to extend it to a double by Maggie Ray. But before that happened, Shelby Guice made an outstanding catch in the bottom of the first inning. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, Abby Givens made a heck of a catch in centerfield to keep the perfect game going.

“We got some really good defensive effort (today),” Foster said.

Sanders, who helped her own cause by going 2-for-4 at the plate, got all the run support she really needed when ACCS scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Guice added an RBI double in the top of the second inning.

ACCS (9-12, 3-4) added two runs in the top of the fourth inning and scored its last run in the top of the sixth. Central Private pitcher A. Fucich had her issues finding the strike zone as she walked seven batters.

“We put the ball in play. We ran the bases well. Their pitcher walked seven and all but one of the girls she walked scored,” Foster said. “We took advantage of the walks. We got lucky.”

ACCS will next play in the Co-Lin Tournament that will be held in Monticello. The Lady Rebels will play at 10:30 a.m. against the winner of the Columbia Academy-Simpson Academy game.

The Lady Rebels’ final regular-season game will be at home against Centreville Academy next Monday and it will be Senior Night. The junior varsity game will start at 4 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity game at 5:15 p.m.

Franklin County 7,

West Marion 3

COLUMBIA — The Franklin County Lady Bulldogs got a small measure of revenge Thursday night with their 7-3 win over the West Marion Lady Trojans in the Region 7-3A opener for both teams.

Small because both teams still have five games still to go in region play, and last year West Marion defeated Franklin County 1-0 on its home field to win the region championship.

“Last year West Marion took first place in district. The girls were ready and had their minds set on going home with a win,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dana Smith said.

Franklin County scored four runs off West Marion pitcher Natalie Johnson in the top of the first inning on a three-run double by Destiney Dedeaux and an RBI double by Kenyatta Hunt.

In the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, Allison Hauer delivered with a three-run double to make it a 6-3 game. Lay Lay Griffin added an RBI groundout to give them a four-run lead.

Hauer was the only multiple hitter for Franklin County (7-4, 1-0) as she went 2-for-4. Martin went 3-for-3 while Case and Johnson each went 2-for-3 for West Marion.

“They’ve got a good team. We got some key hits when we needed them,” Smith said. “Our bats just seemed to wake up one more time in the seventh. We loaded the bases and Allison burned the outfield.”

Franklin County hosts Hazlehurst next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Trinity 15,

Tallulah Academy 3

NATCHEZ — Even though Trinity Episcopal had just four hits in its 15-3 win over Tallulah Academy Thursday afternoon at the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball Complex, one of them left the park.

Christina Givens hit a home run and had three runs batted for the Lady Saints, who remained undefeated in MAIS District 6-A and extended their winning streak to five in a row.

The main reason they had such few hits is that Tallulah Academy pitchers walked several batters throughout the four-inning contest. In the bottom of the first inning alone, the Lady Saints scored eight runs to take a commanding lead.

Trinity Episcopal (8-6, 4-0) got another strong pitching performance from Katie Steele, who allowed just four hits and struck out six.

Next up for the Lady Saints is a home game against Briarfield Academy next Monday. The varsity game starts at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the junior varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

WCCA 3, Centreville 0

CENTREVILLE — Caroline Walker held Centreville Academy to just four hits and Bethany Fletcher hit a two-run home run to lead Wilkinson County Christian Academy to a big win Thursday night in MAIS District 5-AA.

Big because if WCCA (12-5, 5-2) defeats Silliman Institute at home next Thursday, the Lady Rams will not only have swept the Lady Wildcats, but they also will win the district championship. Silliman’s only loss to date in district play was a home loss to WCCA.

The Lady Rams were riding the momentum of their 13-2 win at home over ACCS in five innings on Labor Day.

Fletcher’s home run occurred in the top of the first inning in which the Lady Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead. And while that was all the scoring in the game, that would be all the run support Walker would need. She struck out five and walked none

Both teams still had opportunities to put runs on the board. Walker doubled in the top of the second inning, but was thrown out at home on the very next batter. Centreville’s Ariana Bigner led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple, but Walker retired the side to leave Bigner stranded at third base.

“Caroline is just a competitor. When I give her the ball, it’s like turning an animal loose,” WCCA head coach Ray McDaniel said. “It was total team effort. I’m proud of all the girls. Everyone’s contributing.”

On the mound, Bigner struck out six but she also walked four batters.

And while the win got the Lady Rams one step closer to the Class AA South State Playoffs, this was a tough loss for a Lady Tigers team coming off an embarrassing 13-2 loss to Silliman last Tuesday. Centreville fell to 17-9 overall and 4-3 in district play.

Both teams will next play in the Co-Lin Tournament in Monticello. WCCA will take on Brookhaven Academy at 9 a.m. while Centreville goes up against Parklane Academy at 9 a.m.
