Green Wave win wild game 76-50

NATCHEZ — Someone who happened to be passing by Cathedral’s Devereux Stadium Friday night probably thought the scoreboard was broken.

But there was no need for anyone to fix the scoreboard or adjust their eyes. The final score really was Cathedral 76, Enterprise 50.

The Cathedral offense continued its explosive output, as the Green Wave scored on a series of big plays — including a 77-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage — that allowed them to build a 52-7 lead early in the third quarter.

Enterprise made the game look a lot closer than it really was by leaving their starters in after Cathedral coach Ron Rushing had emptied his bench midway through the third quarter.

The Yellow Jackets’ starters continued to throw deep against the Cathedral junior varsity players, and scored 43 meaningless points in the second half, which is something Rushing wasn’t too pleased about after the game.

“You get up that much and ease off because the score is so bad, and then something like that happens,” Rushing said. “It’s just frustrating.”

So frustrating that after the third personal foul penalty by an Enterprise starter against a Cathedral JV player, Rushing put his starting offense back in with a little over three minutes left.

It only took one play for the Green Wave starters to restore order, as Jadarius Ealey scored his third touchdown of the night on a 40-yard scamper that put the Green Wave up 76-42.

Enterprise came back and showed their mighty muscle by throwing a long touchdown pass with 18 seconds left against a freshman defensive back for the final scoring margin.

But while Enterprise might have been able to compete against the Cathedral junior varsity team, they were no match for the Green Wave’s starters.

Green Wave quarterback Caleb Upton attempted just six passes and completed four, but those four went for 198 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half.

As well as Upton did in the air, Ealey was equally as dominant on the ground, as he rushed for 156 yards and three scores on just eight carries.

Ishmael Blackmon also had over 100 yards on the ground for Cathedral, tallying 106 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

“I’m very pleased about the way the offense played,” Rushing said. “(Enterprise) tried to defend the pass and put six in the box, and we were able to run the ball. We had some gaping holes to run through.

The Green Wave led 39-7 at halftime thanks to the offensive onslaught, but the Cathedral special teams would dominate the third quarter.

Daniel Huffines took the opening kickoff of the second half back 82 yards for a touchdown, and after the Green Wave defense forced an Enterprise punt, returned that punt 74 yards for a touchdown that made the score 52-7 with 10:43 remaining in the third quarter.

Rushing then put his back-ups in to get them some experience, and Enterprise took advantage with six second-half touchdowns.

Cathedral did rack up another special teams touchdown, as Kyle Bradley went 60 yards for a score after a free kick following a safety in the fourth quarter, which made the score 68-35.

The Yellowjackets never got closer than 25 points in the second half, and Cathedral salted away the big victory that puts them at 3-0 on the season.

“All 35 guys on the team worked hard and deserved to play in the game,” Rushing said. “Our second and third team just has to play a little better.”
