NATCHEZ — After being suspended for three weeks due to the heavy rain and flooding from the remnants of Tropical Depression No. 5 back on Aug. 18, the 2010 Cathedral Fall Festival Golf Tournament took place Saturday afternoon.
And the 74 players that participated in the four-man scramble in which the profits go directly to Cathedral School had a good time and many of the 18 teams (there were two five-man teams) played some outstanding golf at Beau Pré Country Club.
Seven of those 18 teams wound up with rounds in the 50s with three teams finishing with rounds of 16-under-par 56. That forced a scorecard playoff to determine the top three teams in the championship flight. Team Anderson – Jordan Farmer, Henry Farmer, Jeff Anderson and Casey Hamm, wound up in first place.
The winning team ended up with 14 birdies and an eagle-3 on the par-5 8th hole to go along with three pars.
“We had a bunch of pars. We didn’t make any long puts. We just made the ones we’re supposed to,” Jordan Farmer said. “If we could’ve gotten some long putts to go in, we would’ve done really well. We had a good time. It’s a little hot. My day Henry did good. He made a couple of putts for us.”
Second place went to Team Reeves Drug Store — Gary Farmer, Tom Matthews, Brock Farmer and Bill McKenzie. Matthews and McKenzie each won prizes for closest to the hole – McKenzie on No. 7 and Matthews on No. 16.
“I Had some very good partners. My son Brock played and he had fun. Tom and Bill were solid ‘A’ players,” said Gary Farmer, who is the co-chairman of the Cathedral Fall Festival. “Brock putted well for the team. We shot better than I imagined we would.”
Just like the winning team, the second place team also had 14 birdies, three pars and an eagle on No. 8.
As for this event and the Cathedral Fall Festival, Gary Farmer said, “Me and my wife Liz are co-chairmen. That’s why we started this golf tournament back up (last year). We appreciate the community coming out and supporting Cathedral. We appreciate our fine sponsors. This is the school’s largest fundraiser. We need everyone to mark their calendars for Oct. 9 and 10 and come out and have some family-filled fun.”
Third place in the championship flight went to Team Miss-Lou OB/GYN – Kofi Kumi, Patrick Phillips, Lloyd Trisler and Mark Greggs. That team had 16 birdies to go with two pars.
“We made a lot of putts today. Patrick hit a lot of good wedge shots for us. We just had an easy round, the guys we played with,” Trisler said.
First place in the first flight went to Team Natchez Pediatric Clinic – Kurt Russ, Monty Mayo, Adrian Sandel and Chris Kelley, who shot a round of 10-under-par 62.
Second and third place in the first flight were also determined by a scorecard playoff after two teams finished a 9-under-par 63. Team Green — Tim McCann, Lloyd Howington, Richie Spears, Gill Morris and Barry Loy — ended up in second place.
As for third place, that went to Team Middleton — Tom, Alex, Avery and Wes Middleton.
McCann, who is the chairman of the Cathedral Fall Festival Golf Tournament, said he was pleased with the turnout despite having to postpone the event for a few weeks.
“We appreciate the country club for letting us have it here. We had more teams this year than we did last year and each year we hope to gain two or three teams. We had a 12-year-old participate (Brock Farmer) all the way up to a 70-year-old. I’d like to thank Concordia Bank as our hat sponsor.”
Dan Thibodeaux, who along with his wife Denise are also co-chairmen of the Cathedral Fall Festival, added, “This is one of the events we have in conjunction with the Fall Festival.”
