Natchez — The Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District and its board of commissioners recently announced the election of Robert A. “Bob” Barrett to a two-year term on its board.

The Adams County SWCD is a governmental subdivision of the State of Mississippi located in the third congressional district. Five commissioners govern the Adams County SWCD.

Three are elected in a district-wide election by landowners, and two are appointed by the Mississippi Soil and Water Conservation Commission upon recommendation of the SWCD board of commissioners.

Currently serving on the board of commissioners with Barret are Virginia Salmon, chairman; Joe Merrick, vice chairman; Dr. J.T. Kilroy, secretary and treasurer; and Ross McGehee, past chairman and immediate past president of the Mississippi Association of Conservation Districts.

All commissioners serve without pay to carry out a cooperative program that addresses the natural resource concerns of the district.

Barrett is a native of Greenwood and a graduate of Greenwood High School, Delta State University and Ole Miss.

He served as radar observer in the U.S. Air Force for four years while flying in the strategic air command.

Upon completion of military service, he entered the educational administration field of public schools in Mississippi, where he served for 41 years.

He is married to Claire Barrett for 58 years. They have three grown children, Allen, Terri and Mac, and five grandchildren.
