Easter gift just keeps on giving

VIDALIA — Michelle Bauman and her two children Tyler and Macie have been the benefactors of a gift that just doesn’t seem to quit giving.

Adding one and one for them did not equal two, it equaled six, in the form of rabbits, with two parents and four babies.

And when The Dart landed on Jefferson Street in Vidalia on Wednesday, those rabbits had recently added six more.

At first glance, the Bauman’s house appears just like every other one you see, cars out front, children in the yard and dogs running around outside.

It is when you go inside and take a look around that you notice an Easter gift the Bauman’s got for their children that was a nice fit for the holiday.

“We got our children two bunnies for Easter,” Bauman said. “We probably should have gotten just one.”

Max and Ruby, the two original rabbits, have made quite a family for themselves since they arrived in the Bauman’s home.

Bauman said the rabbits have had two litters, with the most recent group of six newborn rabbits being born in the past two weeks.

With 10 children in their family, Max and Ruby are now separated in different cages to prevent any more babies from being born.

“I think 10 is enough,” Bauman said.

Bauman also owns two dogs, both of which get along with the rabbits pretty well.

“They keep the dogs running,” she said. “We haven’t had any problems with them.”

In between meals of carrots and lettuce, the rabbits do come out and play with the children, Bauman said.

“We let the kids hold the babies,” she said. “They get them and sit in the living room and play. It is something fun we do as a family.”

Bauman was raised on a farm and said pets have always surrounded her.

“There is definitely a good reason for families to have pets,” she said. “The rabbits are just a new pet we have, and I would recommend them to anyone who likes animals and wants something new.”

Bauman’s 5-year-old daughter, Macie, seems to agree with her mom, as she just can’t get enough of the rabbits.

“Ruby is mine,” she said. “The babies are so cute and I get to help feed and take care of them.”

The number of pets will soon be taking a drop in the Bauman house, as Bauman said she is getting ready to give some of the rabbits away.

“They have been good to have,” she said. “They just multiply so fast. I think next time we will get two girl rabbits.”
