Local schools put up lots of points in wins

NATCHEZ — If a Cathedral fan drove by Devereux Stadium this morning, it probably wouldn’t surprise that fan to see the Green Wave offense still putting points on the board.

And they might want to find a referee to blow a whistle, since that seems to be the only way to get quarterback Caleb Upton to stop putting up gaudy numbers.

Upton was just 4 of 6 in passing Friday — for 198 yards and three touchdowns — in a 76-50 stomping of Enterprise High School last Friday. Green Wave head coach Ron Rushing said the work Upton and his surrounding cast is making his job much easier.

“It’s a lot easier to call plays when everything’s clicking like that. Last year, it seemed like we had to call a perfect play just to get 4, 5 or 6 yards,” Rushing said.

“It’s easier to mix things up now. I didn’t expect us to have (these kinds of numbers) this early in the year. I think it’s just kids making plays. The biggest thing to me is our offensive line blocking and giving us time.”

Cathedral rose to 3-0 on the season, and will host St. Frederick this Friday.

Trinity Episcopal got a win on the road against Alpha Christian 57-20, but it wasn’t as easy as the score indicated.

Saints head coach David King said his team was not prepared for the game, and didn’t seem too happy with the results despite the win.

“They were just a little bit less prepared than we were. That was the most unprepared football team that I’ve ever put on the field. Period. We were not very good tonight. Period,” King said after the game.

Kent King rushed for 210 yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Givonni Dent was 6-for-12 in passing with 78 yards.

The Saints (4-0) will host Porter’s Chapel this Friday.

Natchez High improved to 4-0 last Friday with an impressive 29-10 win over Warren Central on the road. The game remained close until the second half, when Natchez scored 15 points while holding Warren Central to three.

“I was definitely impressed with our offensive line play. Those guys really had a great series of games where they haven’t been perfect, but they closed games out for us,” Bulldogs head coach Lance Reed said.

Quarterback Javon Washington went 14-for-23 in passing with 177 yards, and Reed said he’s been impressed with his senior’s ability to make great throws so far this fall.

“He’s been really efficient in passing the ball. He has a tremendous arm and knows where the ball is supposed to go. When he’s on, he’s pretty hard to stop,” Reed said.

Natchez (4-0) has an open week this week, and will travel to Meridian Sept. 24.

ACCS continued to ride the hot feet of running back Brandon Sanders in a 41-32 win over WCCA. Sanders finished with 173 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

Christopher Perry also had a big night for the Rebels, tallying 115 yards on only six carries. Despite the offense’s performance, head coach Paul Hayles said his team left him frustrated most of the night.

“It was one of the most frustrating nights I’ve ever had on the sidelines. We made so many mistakes. Every time we would take the lead, we would make a mistake which would open the door for (WCCA),” Hayles said after the game.

ACCS (4-0) will host Prairie View this Friday.
