WOODVILLE — Franklin County’s slow-pitch softball team wasn’t limited to a lot of singles and doubles in its MHSAA Region 7-3A varsity doubleheader at Wilkinson County Thursday afternoon as it had been earlier this season.
Instead, the Lady Bulldogs went yard several times — seven total in the two games. And they made the most of their extra-base hits as they defeated the Lady Wildcats 13-0 in five innings in Game 1 and 12-1 in six innings in Game 2.
In the first game, Franklin County was the visiting team and got things going by putting up four runs. Winning pitcher Mildred Starks brought in two of those runs with a triple.
Tammy Alexander and KeKe Collins led off the top of the third inning with back-to-back solo home runs as the Lady Bulldogs increased their lead to 8-0. Toni Robinson hit a solo home run an inning later for a 9-0 lead.
Franklin County put the finishing touches on its shutout win in Game 1 with four runs in the top of the fifth. Starks blasted a three-run home run and Destiney Dedeaux had an RBI double.
Starks went 3-for-3 while Dedeaux and Robinson each went 2-for-2 a the Lady Bulldogs had 16 hits in the first game.
Game two was not much better for Wilkinson County, which was the visiting team on its home field.
Franklin County scored one run in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run by Alexander in the bottom of the first. The Lady Bulldogs put the game away by scoring six runs in the bottom of the third inning, which included a two-run homer by Starks and an RBI triple by Emily Cothren.
Wilkinson County (0-6, 0-4) scored its only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning, but the Lady Wildcats provided little resistance to the hot bats of the Lady Bulldogs. Lay Lay Griffin had an RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth and Alexander ended the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Alexander added two doubles in a 4-for-4 performance while Collins and Cothren each went 3-for-3 for Franklin County (10-4, 4-0), which had 21 hits in the second game.
