Saints cruise over Porter’s Chapel

NATCHEZ — For much of the first half, Porter’s Chapel did a good job of keeping Trinity Episcopal’s high-powered offense off the field. The Saints also contributed with one penalty after another.

But when Trinity Episcopal did have the ball, it made the most of its opportunities. Led by Givonni Dent, Tip McKenzie and Kent King, the Saints scored on three of their four possessions to turn a 7-0 deficit into a 22-7 halftime lead.

The Saints, MAIS Class A’s top-ranked team and defending state champions, would go on to dominate the second half en route to a 47-7 win at homecoming over Porter’s Chapel Friday night to remain undefeated.

However, one person who was not pleased with the lack of focus throughout the first two quarters was Trinity head coach David King.

“It was sloppy. We had lots of penalties and a lack of concentration. It was a ‘C’ performance,” King said. “Coach (John) Weaver did a good job preparing his team. We didn’t have the ball but four times in the first half.”

Porter’s Chapel (2-3), which started the season ranked in the Class A poll before back-to-back losses heading into the Trinity game, scored the game’s first points on a 1-yard run by Peter Harris. DeWayne Russell added the extra point and the Eagles were ahead 7-0 at the 5:28 mark of the opening quarter.

That lead would not last very long — less than a minute to be exact. On Trinity’s next possession, Dent connected with McKenzie on a 34-yard touchdown pass and Zach Marshall made the point after for a 7-7 game with 4:43 to go in the first quarter. The Saints would take the lead for good on King’s 14-yard with 3:29 left in the first quarter.

The combination of Dent and McKenzie were at it again in the second quarter, as the two hooked up on a 39-yard touchdown pass with 5:20 left until halftime. Jake Winston threw to Nick Partridge on the two-point conversion pass to give the Saints a 22-7 lead at the break.

McKenzie wasn’t done getting into the end zone just yet. He took the opening kickoff of the second half 97 yards for a touchdown for a 28-7 Trinity lead.

“Tip’s an electric athlete. I had the luxury of a lot of kids to go to. It was his night,” King said.

Kent King scored his second touchdown of the game on a 33-yard run with 4:02 to in the third quarter. Marshall’s extra point gave Trinity (5-0) a commanding 35-7 lead.

Dent completed 4 of 7 passes for 91 yards with no interceptions while King had 12 carries for 168 yards. Trinity’s defense allowed just 143 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers.

Daniel Dunaway added a 22-yard touchdown run and Partridge had a 17-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

“We made some adjustments and played better in the second half. But still, we had far too many penalties,” coach King said. “In the third quarter, the seniors got us fired up. Our defense is very talented. But you want to be a little more polished than we are. Everything is correctable.”
