Wildcats want to keep riding momentum

WOODVILLE — After three straight wins and a 20-19 comeback victory over Port Gibson last week, the Wilkinson County Wildcats are riding high.

Now, head coach Elbert Lyles wants that wave of momentum to continue this week against Crystal Springs before the Wildcats get into Region 7-3A play next week.

“We’re going in there with the intention of getting another road victory,” Lyles said. “That would be a big morale booster for us. If we can have a good team effort and good win, we can carry that into next week’s practice in preparation for our first district game against Franklin County.”

The Wildcats are already riding high after coming back from a 13-0 deficit to defeat Port Gibson on the road 20-19 last Friday night.

“We didn’t feel like we performed the way we would have liked, but at the same time we were able to get a win,” Lyles said. “Being on the road, that was a big win for us.”

And Lyles said a big comeback road win like that is great for the program.

“Winning brings about winning, so it definitely is a big motivational thing for our kids,” Lyles said. “When they go out Friday night, they’ll have the confidence they can be victorious.”

And the Wildcats hope to avoid a letdown against a Crystal Springs team that has struggled to a 1-4 record.

The Tigers have lost their last two games by a combined score of 87-12.

“They’re trying to put it together, so to speak,” Lyles said of the Tigers. “They’ll get after you hard, but they make mistakes like turning the ball over, that has cost them. I just hope they don’t get it together Friday night.”

Lyles said standout receiver Devin Fosselman will be held out of the game as he is still recovering from an ankle injury suffered three weeks ago.

“We tried him out against Port Gibson, and he had five or six snaps, but he wasn’t at a percentage we felt like we want him to be,” Lyles said. “So right now we’re looking at him being out until Franklin County. Our goal is to get him 100 percent for district play.”
