BASTROP, La. — It was a battle of undefeated and ranked teams Friday night as Bastrop, No. 6 in Class 4A, hosted Block, No. 8 in Class 1A. Both teams went into this game with 3-0 records.
But that was where the similarities stopped Friday night. Block had numerous chances to put points on the board in the first half, only to come up empty. And Bastrop eventually made them pay as the Rams put up 38 points in the second half to take a 46-0 victory.
“The first half our game plan worked. We kept it out of their hands. We blew some opportunities and you can’t do that against a team the quality of Bastrop,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said.
Indeed you can’t. Block had a big-time advantage in time of possession in the first half. The Bears had the ball for over 19 minutes to just over four minutes for Bastrop (4-0) and had the ball inside the Rams’ 5-yard line three different times.
But mistakes hurt them in a huge way. One touchdown was called back because of an illegal motion penalty and they were unable to score on that possession.
Another time, the Bears had the ball at the Bastrop 2-yard line before a holding penalty pushed them back. The Rams ended up blocking a field goal. Again no points.
The other time Block (3-1) got that close to the goal line, it turned the ball over on downs. Yet Bastrop led just 8-0 at halftime. Then the Rams showed their power in the second half.
“The second half, we had the ball first and went 3-and-out. We punted to them and they ran it back for a touchdown. They wore us down. They’re real big up front. Their 4A size and ability showed up in the second half,” Vault said.
Block junior nose guard Ryan Gant had to leave the game after suffering a sprained knee in the second half.
Block plays at Mangham next Friday at 7 p.m.
