Duo leads Saints to success

CENTRAL, La. — Tip McKenzie and Givonni Dent accounted for all six of Trinity Episcopal’s touchdowns as the No. 1 team in MAIS Class A had little trouble in defeating Central Private School 42-14 Friday night.
What perhaps was the most amazing part about this game was that McKenzie only touched the ball four times on offense — three carries and one reception. And yet he ended up with 188 yards rushing and 50 yards receiving with three total touchdowns.
And the pass Dent threw was his only one of the entire game. Dent also scored on a 3-yard touchdown run.
If that wasn’t enough, McKenzie and Dent each scored a defensive touchdown. McKenzie gave Trinity a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when he picked off a pass and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown. Zach Marshall added the extra point.
Dent gave the Saints a 21-0 lead nearly midway through the second quarter on a 46-yard interception return.
Trinity (6-0) led Central Private 35-0 before the Rebels finally got on the scoreboard on Dustin Johnson’s 1-yard run with 4:51 to go in the third quarter. Ryan Bowman threw to Seth Stevens for the 2-point conversion.
McKenzie’s second rushing touchdown of the game, a 51-yard run late in the third quarter, gave the Saints a commanding 42-8 lead.
The Rebels scored the game’s final touchdown on a 42-yard pass from Bowman to Lance Wicker with 10:42 remaining.
Even though Central Private (3-3) keyed in on Trinity’s Kent King, he still finished with 97 yards rushing on 19 carries.
Despite the lopsided win, there were probably a few things the Saints could improve on, such as the 217 rushing yards the Saints gave up or the discrepancy in first downs — 18 for Central Private to just 10 for Trinity.
But on the other hand, Trinity had 328 total rushing yards and turned the ball over just once. The Saints’ defense intercepted two passes and recovered two fumbles.
Trinity Episcopal will put its undefeated record on the line next Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts River Oaks, which is ranked No. 2 in Class AA and is also undefeated after a closer-than-expected 21-7 win over Prairie View Academy.
