For high school football fans in the Miss-Lou, the 2010 season has had a little bit of everything.

It’s had drama, surprise, excitement and disappointment.

And it has also had a lot of wins. In fact, if you combined the records of the four teams in Natchez, it would be 25-5. That’s pretty stout.

But it’s more than just the records. It’s the way these teams are going about getting the records makes it so exciting for us that love football in the Miss-Lou.

Each team has had exciting moments throughout the year that has thrilled their fans.

Let’s start with Cathedral. The Green Wave seem to be doing something spectacular every week.

The season started with the Green Wave setting two school records. Quarterback Caleb Upton set a record with 471 passing yards in a 48-34 win over Loyd Star, and the team set a record for most points in a game with 76 against Enterprise.

Cathedral’s only loss came down to a missed field goal in the final seconds, but the Green Wave made up for that by scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion with no time left to upset defending state champion Mount Olive 22-21.

Next week is a great chance for the Wave to make some more history, as they are in prime position to end a five-game losing streak against their arch-rivals, St. Aloysius.

The Trinity Episcopal Saints are also full of excitement these days, and none more so than what they did on Friday night against defending MAIS Class AA state champion Brookhaven Academy.

The Cougars entered the game with the state’s longest current winning streak at 22 games, but left with a 34-28 loss.

Tip McKenzie provided the winning play when he returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter after Brookhaven had tied the game with a field goal.

It was a thrilling finish to a thrilling game for the 8-0 Saints.

Natchez High knows something about thrilling finishes.

But they finally were on the right side one on Friday.

After losing their previous two games by a combined seven points, the Bulldogs finally put a game away with a spectacular 34-yard touchdown reception by Trevon Chatman with 40 seconds left to give Natchez a crucial 24-17 win over Brandon.

Natchez now sits at 1-2 in Region 3-6A, and firmly controls its playoff destiny.

After starting region play with its three toughest opponents, the Bulldogs’ schedule eases up considerably from here on out.

Natchez will be expected to win its final four games and qualify for the playoffs for the third year in a row.

Adams County Christian suffered a tough 16-0 loss to Central Private on Friday, but the Rebels are still 6-2 on the season, which is a far cry from the one win they had in two seasons combined a few years ago.

ACCS faces a critical district game against Silliman next Friday, and if the Rebels want to return to the playoffs, they are going to need to be victorious.

But whatever the outcome, I’m sure it will be just like the first half of the season has been — exciting.
