FAYETTE — Jefferson County football coach James Herrington knows there is nothing his players can do now about last Friday’s heartbreaking loss to Wilkinson County.

So he wants his team to just forget about it.

The Tigers lost to the Wildcats 26-18 on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left, but Herrington cautioned against letting that loss linger as Jefferson County (4-2, 1-1 Region 7-3A) prepares to face perennial power Tylertown (5-2, 2-0) on the road.

“We really have no other choice (but to move on),” Herrington said. “That game is gone. The district is ahead of us and playoff positioning is ahead of us. There’s no time to sit around and cry about what happened Friday. We’ve got to move on.”

Herrington saw several things in Friday’s loss his team can improve on.

“We’ve got to take care of the football,” Herrington said. “We had three turnovers and had several opportunities to score inside the red zone, but didn’t. We also had several big plays and a touchdown called back on holding penalties. We’ve got to clean up our fundamentals.”

And Herrington knows the Tigers can’t make those type of mistakes if they are going to beat the powerful Chiefs.

“Basically we’re going to have to play pretty much a perfect game,” Herrington said. “We aren’t going to be able to makes mistakes and win. (Tylertown) doesn’t make very many, and we can’t many any.”

Herrington said Tylertown is a tough, physical team that isn’t going to trick you very much offensively.

“When you play Tylertown, one thing is for sure. They are going to have a tough running game,” Herrington said. “They are committed to what they do and they do it well.”

But they aren’t strictly a running team. They will also throw a deep pass if you aren’t prepared for it,” Herrington said.

“A lot of the passes they throw are set up off their runs,” Herrington said. “You’ve got to pay attention in the secondary. I saw them against South Pike and they hit the deep throw a couple of times. They will get you if you aren’t ready for it.”
