NATCHEZ — For the past several weeks, Natchez High School has been the victim of some untimely turnovers.
Friday night against Jim Hill, though, the Bulldogs turned the tables, taking advantage of several Tiger fumbles and interceptions in a 52-6 blowout win.
Natchez head coach Lance Reed said he was happy that his team took advantage of turnovers for a change, but was still displeased with losing two fumbles late in the game.
“It’s good to be on the other end, able to receive some, but we still didn’t feel like we played a complete game,” Reed said.
“We had a few bad series where we stunk it up a bit and turned the ball over. Our goal is to play a complete football game in all areas.”
On Natchez’s opening possession, the Bulldogs drove the ball down the field and Kevin Bailey punched it in from the 2-yard line. The extra point missed, but Natchez had an early 6-0 lead.
Later in the first quarter, Natchez recovered a Jim Hill fumble on the Tigers’ 8-yard line. The Bulldogs failed to score on first and second down, but quarterback Javon Washington hit Trevon Chatman with a touchdown pass on third down.
With 8:42 to go in the second quarter, Bailey tallied his second touchdown of the night from 13 yards out to give Natchez a 19-0 lead.
Tiger quarterback Terence Draper threw his first interception of the night with less than three minutes to go before halftime when Joe Perry picked him off. Natchez took advantage of the turnover once again with Damion Williams catching a 16-yard touchdown pass from Washington with 2:33 to go before the half.
Williams wasn’t done, however. On the ensuing Tiger possession, he intercepted a pass from Draper that set up another Bulldog scoring drive. Derrion Johnson caught a 25-yard touchdown pass with 1:04 to go to give the Bulldogs a 33-0 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Larry Chatman scored the next Bulldog touchdown on a 14-yard run with 8:12 left in the quarter. Jim Hill finally got on the board with 2:16 in the third on a 46-yard touchdown reception by Frederick Brown.
The Bulldogs scored their final two touchdowns in the fourth on a 19-yard catch by Scott Turner and a 44-yard run by Devonte Jackson.
Reed said he was pleased with his defense, but there were still a few kinks to work out.
“Our defense flew around and had an opportunity to make plays on balls. We really executed out scheme well,” Reed said.
“We gave up a big play (on Brown’s catch), and we can’t let that happen. We’ll work on that in practice this week. Overall I was pleased with our play, but we’re still trying to get better.”
Natchez rose to 6-2 on the year, 2-2 in MHSAA District 3-6A. Jim Hill fell to 1-7 on the season, 0-4 in District 3-6A.
