BATON ROUGE (AP) — Three hundred health care workers and another 100 college employees will be laid off because Gov. Bobby Jindal cut the state budget by $107 million.

The cuts were announced Friday to account for a deficit from the last fiscal year.

Higher education took one-third of the cuts, about $35 million. The state health department is cutting $21 million. Another $12 million was stripped from the social services department.

Health care cuts include reductions to parish health units and closing the public health unit in New Orleans. A state-run group home for the developmentally disabled in Terrebonne Parish will be shuttered.

Jindal called for leadership from college administrators and state agency chiefs in continuing services while facing shrinking budgets — and asked for no whining.
