NATCHEZ — A three-car wreck at the intersection of John R. Junkin Drive and Homochitto Street sent two people to the hospital and fear through onlookers around lunchtime Friday.

Natchez Police Department Lt. Justin Jones said at approximately 12:20 a Ford Expedition SUV collided with a Toyota Tundra truck, which went airborne and then struck a Natchez City Transit bus.

The driver of the truck, Channing Lee, was taken to Natchez Community Hospital, and the driver of the SUV, Gwendolyn Thomas, was taken to Natchez Regional Medical Center.

Jones said no injuries were reported and both drivers were being observed at the hospitals.

Jones said the Ford Expedition was traveling eastbound when it moved to the left-hand turning lane to turn onto Homochitto Street. The Toyota Tundra was traveling westbound down John R. Junkin Drive.

“The Ford proceeded to turn left, and both vehicles met in the intersection,” Jones said.

Jones said the Expedition spun around until it was facing west in the westbound lanes. Jones said, according to witness reports, the Toyota truck left the ground and made contact with a city transit vehicle before coming to a stop on the driver’s side of the truck.

“After it landed, the gentleman was trapped inside and had to be extricated,” Jones said.

The driver of the city transit bus, Joseph West, and the lone passenger on the bus were unharmed.

“It was just bad timing for him,” Jones said.

No traffic citations were issued at the time, and officers were unable to determine who was at fault in the wreck Friday.
