NATCHEZ — It was not a good day for a pair of the area’s varsity girls’ basketball teams Saturday afternoon at the ACCS Lady Rebels Tip-Off Tournament.

Two teams with two new head coaches squared off as Centerville Academy took on WCCA Saturday. The Lady Tigers are now led by John Gray while the Lady Rams’ head coach is Ray McDaniel.

And it didn’t take long for Centreville to take control of this game. Juniors Katie Berry and Miley combined to score 32 points as the Lady Tigers jumped out a big lead and rolled past the Lady Rams 45-21.

Berry led all scorers with 20 points and Miley had 12 points as Centreville (2-0) took a 16-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and was never seriously challenged after that. Tori Rouse added nine points for the Lady Tigers.

Caroline Walker led WCCA (0-2) with 17 points. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t get much help from her teammates.

In the first game, Tensas Academy had no answer for Silliman Institute’s Bradleigh Brignac as she scored 15 points in leading the Lady Wildcats to a 40-27 come-from-behind win over the Lady Chiefs.

Silliman actually trailed Tensas Academy 7-4 after one quarter of play. But over the next two quarters, the Lady Wildcats’ turned up the defensive pressure on a young Lady Chiefs team en route to a 19-11 lead at halftime and a 33-15 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Kayla Davidson added nine points and Sam Williams chipped in with six points for Silliman. Brittany Bambui led Tensas Academy (0-2) with a game-high 16 points, but only three of her teammates ended up in the scoring column.

Jefferson County Classic

FAYETTE — Jefferson County’s varsity basketball teams swept past East Feliciana (La.) Saturday night at the Jefferson County High Basketball Classic. The Lady Tigers rolled past the Lady Eagles 51-27 and then the Tigers defeated the Eagles.

In the varsity girls’ game, 10 of the 14 players on Jefferson County’s roster got into the scoring column. Haley Turner finished with 16 points and Taylor Mims added 12 points to lead the Lady Tigers.

East Feliciana, on the other hand, had trouble getting shots to fall against the Lady Tigers’ defense. The Lady Eagles trailed Jefferson County 22-12 at halftime and then were outscored by the Lady Tigers 29-15 in the second half. Tryea White lead the Lady Eagles with eight points.

Natchez High 51, South Pike 41 (Girls)

FAYETTE — Led by Ashley Minor and Jacquerra Williams, the Natchez High Lady Bulldogs defeated the South Pike Lady Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Jefferson County High Basketball Classic.

Minor made one 3-pointer and ended up leading all scorers with 16 points while Jacquerra Williams finished with 14 points. Kiana Jones made a pair of 3-pointers as she wound up with eight points and Jacquita Williams also drained two 3s for her six points.

Natchez High took a 25-21 lead at halftime and then outscored South Pike 26-20 in the second half. M. Mcnalty led South Pike with 12 points and L. Gordon added 10 points.

Unlike the varsity girls’ and varsity boys’ games involving Jim Hill and Wilkinson County that were played earlier in the day in which those two teams played by quarters, this game used two 16-minutes halves.

Jim Hill 69, Wilkinson County 61 (Girls)

FAYETTE — Jade Hooper scored 18 points and Kierariel Mitchell had 17 points to lead four Jim Hill players in double figures as the Lady Tigers edged past the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats Saturday morning at the Jefferson County High Basketball Classic.

Derita Luckett added 15 points and Shakira Johnson chipped in with 12 points for Jim Hill. But even with a balanced scoring attack, the Lady Tigers had to earn this win against a good Wilkinson County team.

With Tyesha Harris and Lineasia Palmer leading the way for the Lady Wildcats, the two teams went into halftime tied at 30-30. The Lady Wildcats led the Lady Tigers 15-13 after one quarter of play, but Jim Hill responded by outscoring Wilkinson County 17-15 in the second quarter

Harris finished with a game-high 19 points and Palmer added 18 points. Laspencia Brown scored 14 points for the Lady Wildcats.

However, the Lady Tigers pulled away in the second half as they outscored the Lady Wildcats 21-18 in the third quarter and 18-13 in the fourth quarter.

Jim Hill 78, Wilkinson County 34 (Boys)

FAYETTE — Fred Thomas scored more points by himself than Wilkinson County did as a team as he torched the Wildcats for a game-high 36 points in leading the Tigers to an easy win Saturday morning at the Jefferson County High Basketball Classic.

Jeremy Moore added 24 points for Jim Hill, which took a 19-5 lead over Wilkinson County at the end of the first quarter and then held the Wildcats to just two points in the second quarter en route to a 37-7 halftime lead.

Bryson Robertson led Wilkinson County with eight points.
