VIDALIA — Time had already expired, and it looked like the Russ Wood State Farm Jets would lose 22-18 to the Ater Warehouse Steelers Tuesday.
But a second chance, a la LSU versus Tennessee, would change the fortunes of the Jets.
The Jets and Steelers were facing off in the Miss-Lou Football 8-and-under Super Bowl at Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium, and the Steelers had hurried to get a play off before time expired. Even after the clock ran out, a glimmer of hope appeared in the form of a yellow flag, as the Steelers were called for being offsides.
The Jets were moved up to the Steelers’ 30-yard line, and were given one more play. The Jets put their fates in the hands of Jaquan Wilson, who had already scored three touchdowns for the Jets.
And Wilson played the role of hero, running around the ride side and taking the ball in for a 30-yard touchdown on the final play of the game. The Jets won 24-22, and assistant coach Julius Wilson could hardly believe it.
“I’m overwhelmed,” Wilson said. “I’m excited for these kids. We worked hard all year. We’re the smallest team in the league, but we still managed to pull it off.”
Jaquan Wilson scored the first touchdown of the game with a 30-yard carry at the 16:20 mark in the first half. The Jets failed to get the two-point conversion.
The Steelers responded with a 4-yard touchdown run by Hayden McFarland, and Glaston Magee scored the two-point conversion. Jaquan Wilson put the Jets up 12-8 at halftime on a 21-yard touchdown run with four minutes to go in the half.
In the second half, Benjamin White put the Steelers ahead 14-12 with a 13-yard touchdown carry, but failed to get the two-point conversion. Jaquan Wilson struck back with a 35-yard touchdown run to put the Jets on top 18-14.
With a minute left in regulation, the Steelers scored on a 12-yard run by Tristan Halford, and Magee got the two-point conversion, giving them a 22-18 lead.

The 10-and-under Super Bowl took place immediately following the game between Jets and Steelers. The Cowboys came out on top thanks to a touchdown run and an interception return.
In the second quarter, Demond Fleming caught an interception and ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown. Josh Day scored on the two-point conversion.
With 3:30 to go in the fourth, Dezmond Brown got a 7-yard touchdown carry, and Day scored the two-point conversion.
The Packers’ only touchdown came in the second quarter on a Caden Poole 4-yard run.
Cowboys coach Paul Nelson said his players learned some valuable lessons playing in the Miss-Lou Youth Football league.
“The two most important things are teamwork and sportsmanship,” Nelson said. “Good and bad things are going to happen on the field, and you have to be able to rebound.
“You also have to learn to work together without fussing at one another. We’re trying to get them to understand that we’re here to encourage and build up, not put one another down.”
