Local veterans speak to group

Natchez — Several local veterans told of their military experience at the October meeting of the Gov. George Harlan Colonial Dames XVII Century, which took place at Raymond Hall of Jefferson College.

Those speaking were John Dickerson of Natchez, Bobby Scott of Natchez, W.V. “Sonny” Carter of Woodville and Walter “Butch” Thornhill of Natchez.

Dickerson served in the Army in Germany; Scott served in the Army National Guard in Germany; Carter served in the Army in the Philippines and Thornhill served with the Army in France.

Chapter president Mrs. John Dickerson introduced the veterans and explained that the Veterans Service Committee of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century supports representatives at Veterans Affairs hospitals, volunteers at VA clinics, volunteers to state veterans homes, volunteer to military hospitals and volunteers to nursing homes with veterans.

Locally, Thornhill, who volunteers at the Adams County department of veterans affairs, is one of the top drivers from that facility that transports needy veterans to the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery VA Hospital in Jackson.

Scott was instrumental in the founding of the Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg and also volunteers at the World War II Museum in Centreville.

The Gov. George Harlan chapter has won numerous state and national awards for their service to veterans, and the chapter continues to promote patriotic activities on the local and sate levels. New members introduced at the meeting were Sherry Johnson of Doloroso and Vicki Netterville of Woodville. Joyce Windham Shorter is a prospective member.
