VIDALIA — The Vidalia teen charged in a fatal single-vehicle accident was sentenced Friday at the Seventh Judicial District Courthouse in Vidalia.
Cody Allen McEntyre, 18, of Vidalia was sentenced to the maximum sentence of five years hard labor, with credit for time served, for negligent homicide and six months, with credit for time served, for negligent injuring.
McEntyre has served five months of his sentence already.
Judge Kathy Johnson said that if McEntyre completes a number of counseling and other rehabilitation programs with no major disciplinary incidents, McEntyre could be eligible for probation after serving two full years of his sentence, which would be in June of 2012.
McEntyre quietly and respectfully said he took full responsibility for the actions that killed his friend, 18-year-old Jimmy Williams.
“It hurts to know someone I was friends with died because of me,” McEntyre said to Johnson. “I never meant for anything bad to happen.”
The case began March 28 when the Louisiana State Police responded to an early morning crash involving a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt on Mooselodge Road.
The driver of the vehicle, McEntyre, reportedly lost control as it entered a curve in the road, and the vehicle began to rotate to the right, traveling 160 feet before leaving the road, according to an LSP release at the time of the accident.
The vehicle would travel another 65 feet before overturning on its left side and striking a utility pole.
According to police reports, McEntyre was traveling 76 mph on Mooselodge Road, while the road was under construction and the speed limit was 25 mph.
Three people were in the vehicle, McEntyre, Jimmy Wiliams and 17-year-old Jenny Jo Williams.
Jimmy Williams had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jenny Jo Williams, the sister of the deceased, and McEntyre were transported to local hospitals and treated.
None of the passengers in the vehicle were wearing seat belts.
According to reports from the LSP, McEntyre had been drinking before he drove the vehicle, and his BAC was measured at Natchez Regional Hospital as .13, more than six times the legal limit for a 17-year-old, which is .02.
