VIDALIA — The Concordia Council on Aging has been part of the community since 1968 providing meals and offering services to the elderly community in the parish.
Director Dorothy McDonald said the agency provides services to the elderly community they may not otherwise receive.
“It is a very important organization,” she said. “We are the only ones that provide these activities to senior citizens.”
The council provides meals and activities at two different sites in the parish, one in Ferriday and one in Vidalia. They also provide delivery meals to shut-ins.
Transportation and minor housekeeping services are provided through the council.
“We provide services that help the elderly live independently,” she said.
To qualify for the program, seniors must be Concordia Parish residents age 60 or older.
McDonald said on any day there are more than 35 seniors eating in Ferriday, and more than 20 seniors eating in Vidalia.
McDonald said the council also offers wellness programs, recreational activities, nutrition education and medication management.
The council needs supplies, volunteers and money to continue to offer these services year round to seniors in the parish, McDonald said.
McDonald said paper products, such as toilet paper, paper towels and paper cups, are always needed at the council.
Food items are also accepted to help feed parish seniors throughout the year, Stephens said.
“We are looking for anything that can be used in either of the eating shelters,” she said.
McDonald said any of these items can be dropped off at the Concordia Council on Aging office at 405 Carter St., in Vidalia, or either of the eating sites in the parish.
The Vidalia site is located on Texas Street and the Ferriday location is on Texas Avenue.
