MONTEREY — What does it take to be the 12th grade student of the year for Concordia Parish?

For Monterey High School senior Alex Thomas, it took a 4.0 GPA, a long list of extracurricular activities and a desire to succeed at whatever life throws her way.

Thomas said she was surprised when she found out she was named Concordia Parish student of the year.

“I didn’t really know if I would win or not,” she said. “I am just really honored that I did win, and they picked me.”

This is not the first time Thomas has been honored for her academic achievements, as she won Concordia Parish’s student of the year when she was in eighth grade as well.

“I have had a 4.0 GPA all of my life,” she said. “It is really important to do well in school. If you don’t do well there, how can you do well in life?”

Thomas’ determination and desire isn’t just limited to the classroom. She is also a member of 4-H, Beta Club and the dance line.

“I used to be a cheerleader, but I didn’t have time to do that and dance,” she said. “I have always loved to dance, ever since I was tiny.”

Thomas also dresses up as the school’s mascot for sporting events, and said she enjoys showing her school spirit.

“It is pretty fun, but it does get a little hot in the costume,” she said. “Especially since the fan in the suit that is supposed to cool me is broken.”

While Thomas said she is uncertain of whether or not she will dance in college, she is certain of one thing, her future.

“I want to be a pediatrician,” she said. “I love kids and have always wanted to be a doctor.”

Thomas said she has been accepted to both Louisiana State University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

“I am probably going to go to ULM,” she said. “I am going to major in biology and work on being a pediatrician from there.”

With the next four years of her life virtually mapped out, Thomas said she has her parents to thank for pushing her to work hard.

“They have always pushed me to make good grades,” she said. “They always help me when I need it.”

Alex Thomas is the daughter of Joseph and Kathy Thomas.
