BROOKHAVEN — One of the best teams in MAIS Class A took on one of the best teams in Class AA Tuesday afternoon as Trinity Episcopal squared off against Marshall Academy at the Brookhaven Academy Holiday Tournament.
And the two teams certainly did not disappoint the fans who traveled from both Natchez and Holly Springs to see this game. Marshall Academy led by nine points after three quarters of play before Trinity Episcopal went on a big run in the fourth quarter for a 75-64 win.
Not a bad birthday present for Saints head coach David King. But the way the first half, and especially the second quarter, went for the No. 4 team in Class A, a comeback did not appear possible.
“We were just very, very lethargic in the first half. We had a spirited talk at halftime and came back and responded well,” King said.
The Saints took a 19-17 lead over the Patriots at the end of the first quarter, but scored just 11 points in the second quarter and trailed 39-30 at halftime. And even though the Saints scored 17 points in the third quarter, so did the Patriots.
Taylor Maurey and Chase Ferrell gave Trinity all they could handle in this game. Maurey finished with 22 points and Ferrell scored 14points.
Trinity finally tied the game with just 2:07 left in the game and didn’t take its first until there was only 1:20 to go in the game. Led by Tip McKenzie, Kent King and Tanner Cage, the Saints outscored the Patriots 28-8 in the fourth quarter for the amazing win.
McKenzie led all scorers with 23 points while Kent King had 19 points and was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line and Cage ended up with 13 points.
“At the end we just really pressured them. We brought the pressure up,” David King said. “Very good win against a quality opponent. It was a well-played game by two good teams. They played better in the first half and we played better in the second half.”
Trinity Episcopal (9-2) will take on the winner of the East Rankin/Central Private game today at 5:20 p.m.
Natchez High 68,
Carencro 58 (OT)
LAFAYETTE, La. — On Day 2 of the 2010 Sunkist Shootout, it was almost déj vu for the Natchez High Bulldogs as far as the officiating was concerned.
After a controversial one-point loss to E.D. White on Monday, the Bulldogs made sure they did not let the referees determine the outcome as they defeated the Carencro Bears in overtime Tuesday morning.
“It was the character of the guys. The officiating was worse today,” Natchez High assistant coach David Haywood said. “But the guys kept playing and kept playing. In overtime I told them, ‘Don’t worry about them (refs).’ We beat them (Carencro) for the four minutes.”
Carencro outscored Natchez High 19-12 in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer by guard Jarvis Gotch with 0:00.4 left that forced overtime. But the Bulldogs dominated the overtime period and outscored the Bears 15-5. Gotch finished with 13 points and Christian Anders added 10 points for Carencro (11-5).
“Carencro is a really good team. They have a player I know can play at the college level. They have an inside player who’s 6-7. They kept playing hard regardless of the game situation,” Haywood said.
Quincy Washington was 5-of-8 from 3-pont range and finished with a game-high 24 points while Rashun Bates stepped up big time as he nearly had a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds. Trevon Chatman was held to just nine points.
“In the locker room talking to (head) coach (Mike Martin), I told him I wasn’t ready to go home. I wanted to do this for him. I took some good shots,” Washington said.
As to how the Bulldogs were able to bounce back from the loss to E.D. White to beat a good Carencro team, Washington said, “We had time together. We sucked it up. We didn’t get the calls we wanted. We went hard at them.”
Haywood added, “They weren’t going to let the same thing happen to them (Monday) happen to them today. All of our coaches were proud of them. Rashun played well around the basket. He made a lot of tip-ins. It came full circle for him. Quincy had another great shooting day.”
Natchez High (6-8) will take on Teurlings Catholic today at 2 p.m.
Comeaux 71, Vidalia 49
LAFAYETTE, La. — Led by Kenry Lewis and Devin Foster, the Comeaux Spartans pulled away from Vidalia in the third quarter and went on to eliminate the Vikings from the 2010 Sunkist Shootout with a 22-point win Tuesday afternoon.
Lewis scored 21 points and Foster had 20 points to lead Comeaux (13-3) in scoring. But for a while, Vidalia made the game quite interesting.
“In the third quarter, we cut it to two. But we weren’t able to sustain our intensity. But for two and a half quarters, we played better than we did yesterday,” Vikings head coach Robert Sanders said. “We’re going to have to improve our defense and rebounds.”
Vidalia (5-8) was led by D.J. Polk with a game-high 22 points. The Vikings begin District 3-3A play next Tuesday when they host Jena.
Wayne Academy 58, ACCS 51
MENDENHALL — Wayne Academy’s duo of Drew Morris and Toby Roach were too much for Adams County Christian School as the Jaguars rallied to defeat the Rebels Tuesday afternoon at the Simpson Academy Holiday Tournament.
Morris wound up with a game-high 24 points while Roach chipped in with 22 points for Wayne Academy, which trailed ACCS 28-25 at halftime before scoring 20 points in the third quarter to retake the lead.
Theo King led ACCS (5-7) with 14 points and Daniel Guedon had nine points. The Rebels had that halftime lead thanks to a 15-9 advantage in the second quarter. Yet once again, the defense couldn’t make enough stops in the third quarter to hold the lead.
ACCS will take on Laurel Home School today at 11:30 a.m. If the Rebels win, they will once again take on Wayne Academy today at 2:30 p.m. The Jaguars, playing their second game of the day, lost to Copiah Academy 64-52.
Hinds AHS 57,
Wilkinson County 47
FAYETTE — Dexter Divinity scored 14 points and Kajuan Williams added 12 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Hinds Agricultural High School Bulldogs defeated the Wilkinson County Wildcats Tuesday afternoon at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.
The first quarter proved to be the key to Hinds AHS’s win as the Bulldogs outscored Wilkinson County 15-6 and then held a 12-point lead at halftime. The Wildcats tried to get back in the game in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to hold them off.
Kenyon McDonald was the leading scorer for Wilkinson County with a game-high 19 points. The Wildcats take on host Jefferson County today at 7:30 p.m.
