MENDENHALL — The Adams County Christian School Rebels won two games Wednesday at the Simpson Academy Holiday Tournament — one of them against a familiar opponent.
In its first game of the day, which had an 11:30 a.m. tip-off, ACCS defeated the Laurel Home School Knight Hawks 74-56 thanks to five players scoring in double figures.
Daniel Guedon led the Rebels with 16 points while Theo King had 12 points, Brandon Walker added 11 points, and James Moffett and Cory Emanuel each chipped in with 10 points.
ACCS led the Knight Hawks, a home school comprised of 10 players from Laurel, 20-13 after one quarter of play and 41-27 at halftime. The Rebels took control of the game in the third quarter on their way to a commanding 66-40 lead.
With that win, ACCS advanced to the consolation game against Wayne Academy, which defeated the Rebels just a day earlier. In the rematch on Wednesday afternoon, the Rebels got 22 points from Moffett and 21 from Guedon and defeated the Jaguars 70-55.
ACCS head coach Rick Fife credited the win to the effort of the Rebels’ defense, which has been a weakness for them this season.
“I thought we played a lot better defense against the post. We took them out of their half-court set. We went to a full-court man press and I think that took them out of their game,” Fife said. “I think our defensive pressure helped.”
The Rebels took a 20-15 lead over the Jaguars at the end of the first quarter and then led by 10 points, 37-27, at halftime. The Jaguars cut the Rebels’ lead to six points at the end of the third quarter, but the Rebels responded with a 20-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Coaker led Wayne Academy with 19 points and Drew Morris added 13 points.
ACCS (7-7) returns to MAIS District 5-AA play on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at Wilkinson County Christian Academy.
Natchez 49, Teurlings Catholic 32
LAFAYETTE, La. — With Quincy Washington scoring just two points, Natchez High needed someone to step up and take the pressure off Trevon Chatman.
That someone turned out to be two players, as Derrian Johnson and Javon Washington helped the Bulldogs defeat the Teurlings Catholic Rebels Wednesday afternoon at the 2010 Sunkist Shootout at St. Thomas More Catholic High School.
Johnson scored 12 points while Washington was instrumental on offense and defense and finished with eight points.
“Derrian played really well. He brought a lot of energy to the floor. He had a couple of steals and assists. He made a few buckets,” Natchez High assistant coach David Haywood said. “And Javon, he was the head of the defense — playing and guarding the ball up top.”
Those two, as well as Chatman, were key in the Bulldogs outscoring the Rebels 18-5 in the third quarter that turned a 22-20 lead at halftime into a 40-25 lead.
“Our defense really stepped up in the third quarter. We kept switching defense and that made them stall on offense. We fed off our energy,” Haywood said.
Chatman, who led all scorers with 20 points, added, “It was good. We played better defense. Our defense made our offense come alive.” And as for his performance, he said, “It just comes to me as the games goes.”
The first half was back and forth between Natchez High (7-8) and Teurlings Catholic. The Bulldogs led 15-11 after one quarter of play, but the Rebels managed to cut the lead to two points by halftime. Teurlings Catholic was led by Justin Battieste with 12 poits.
Natchez High (7-8) will take on Vandebilt Catholic today at 2:30 p.m. in the consolation game.
Central Private 69, Trinity Episcopal 68 (2 OT)
BROOKHAVEN — For the second straight game, Central Private School was held under 100 points. But unlike their 16-point win over East Rankin Academy on Tuesday, the Rebels had a tougher time on Wednesday night at the Brookhaven Academy Holiday Tournament.
And against a much tougher opponent — Trinity Episcopal, ranked No. 4 in Class A. For three quarters, Central Private had scored just 35 points. But the Rebels outscored the Saints 13-8 in the fourth quarter to force overtime and then held on for a one-point win in double overtime.
Central Private led by four points in the final seconds of double overtime before Tip McKenzie made a 3-pointer at the buzzer. However, Trinity Episcopal needed four points to force triple overtime and that was not meant to be. Had the Saints played as well as they did in the first quarter, the game would not have even gone into overtime.
Trinity Episcopal led Central Private, one of the best teams in Class AA, 21-8 at the end of the first quarter. But the Rebels got back in the game in the second quarter and trailed just 28-25 at halftime. Both teams scored 10 points in the first overtime and Central Private put up 11 points in the second overtime to Trinity’s 10.
McKenzie led Trinity (9-3) with a game-high 27 points. Givonni Dent added 14 points and Kent King scored 13 points. Central Private (15-2) was led by Jake Flaggert with 21 points, Taylor Fletcher with 18 points and Simpson Anderson with 10 points.
Trinity Episcopal will take on the loser of the Leake Academy/Brookhaven Academy game in the consolation game at 5:20 p.m. today.
