JACKSON (AP) — The Mississippi House has failed to override a governor’s veto of legislation to place a $20 million subsidy into a state wind pool insurance fund.

The vote Wednesday was 68-52 in favor of an override, but at least 80 votes were needed.

Barbour vetoed the proposal last May. The provision was part of the state Department of Insurance budget. The $20 million would come from a Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund.

Several Gulf Coast lawmakers urged their colleagues to vote for the override. Rep. Frances Fredericks of Gulfport says insurance rates are so high it’s difficult for many property owners to afford their homes.

The Senate hasn’t acted on the veto.
