BROOKHAVEN — Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold knew his team would have to play its best game of the season to have any chance of knocking off West Lincoln, the No. 3 team in Class 1A.
Unfortunately for the Green Wave, they were unable to pull that off. Jay Case had his way with the Green Wave and wound up scoring 30 points as the Bears remained undefeated both overall and in Region 7-1A with a 72-46 win Friday night.
“That Jay Case, there ain’t very many people in the state of Mississippi who can shoot the ball better than him. He’s a skinny kid, but, man, he shoots,” Arnold said. “When he gets open, just put the points on the board.”
West Lincoln’s defense wasn’t too shabby, either. And that was quite evident in the first quarter as the Bears held the Green Wave to a mere five points. While Cathedral did play better offensively the rest of the game, the defense could not slow down West Lincoln.
The Bears put up 19 points in the first quarter, 21 in the second and 20 in the third on their way to a commanding 60-35 lead.
Calvin Kees added 11 points and Dee Price had nine for West Lincoln (16-0, 2-0).
Carl Hammitte led Cathedral (6-7, 1-1) with 12 points and Luke Whitaker chipped in with nine points. Cathedral hosts Bogue Chitto next Tuesday.
Natchez High 64, Terry 54
TERRY — Trevon Chatman made sure Natchez High would finally pick up its first win in Division 6-6A this season by scoring a game-high 30 points as the visiting Bulldogs got by the host Terry Bulldogs Friday night.
Natchez High (9-9, 1-3) led by just three points at halftime before pulling away by outscoring Terry 20-14 in the third quarter.
Jonathan Griffin scored 14 points and Javon Washington had 12 points for Natchez High, which hosts Lanier next Tuesday.
Marksville 88, Vidalia 80
MARKSVILLE, La. — Kyren Ford torched Vidalia to the tune of 36 points as the Marksville Tigers held on for an eight-point win over the Vikings in District 3-3A action Friday night.
The Tigers scored 31 points in the second quarter as they broke a 23-23 tie after one quarter of play to take a 54-44 lead at halftime. They would have been ahead by 13 at the break, but Dee Fleming hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it a 10-point game.
With Alvin Bell and D.J. Polk on the bench for much of the third quarter with foul trouble, Vidalia still cut Marksville’s lead to just two points during the quarter. But Bell eventually fouled out in the fourth quarter and the Vikings were unable to take the lead away from the Tigers.
Polk led Vidalia (6-9, 1-1) with 21 points while Bell had just seven points. Brandon Bauchman ended up with 13 points and Terrence Thompson added 11 points. Jacoby Austin had 17 points and Gabriel Alexander finished with 16 points for Marksville.
Vidalia plays host to Buckeye next Tuesday.
Wilkinson County 58, Amite County 54
WOODVILLE — Matthew Kelly led a balanced scoring attack for Wilkinson County with 14 points as the Wildcats held on to defeat the Amite County Trojans Friday night in Region 7-3A action.
Kenyon McDonald and Delvin Fosselman added 10 points apiece for Wilkinson County, which led by 13 points after three quarters of play before holding off Amite County’s furious fourth-quarter rally.
D. Banks led Amite County with 15 points and D. Granger added 13 points.
Wilkinson County (7-11, 4-0) hosts Hazlehurst next Tuesday.
