JACKSON — Trinity Episcopal’s varsity basketball teams ended up with a split with Class AAA Jackson Prep Friday at the Jackson Academy Classic.
The Saints, ranked No. 4 in Class A, came away with a huge win as they upset the third-ranked Patriots 59-46 thanks to a balanced scoring attack and a good game plan by head coach David King.
Trinity Episcopal slowed the tempo of the game down in the first half by passing the ball, which took Jackson Prep completely out of synch. The Saints took a 12-6 lead after one quarter of play and 28-15 by halftime.
The Patriots tried to play its up-tempo style of basketball in the second half, but the Saints were up for the challenge. Jackson Prep could only cut two points off Trinity’s lead at the end of the third quarter and the Saints responded by outscoring the Patriots 18-16 in the fourth quarter.
Tip McKenzie led Trinity Episcopal (13-4) with a game-high 15 points while Tanner Cage had 14 points and Givonni Dent chipped in with 12 points.
Jackson Prep (14-4) was led by Clay Hubbard with 13 points and De Graeber with 12 points.
The Lady Saints didn’t fare quite as well as they fell behind early and ended up losing to the second-ranked Lady Patriots 57-26.
Jackson Prep dominated the first quarter both offensively and defensively against the current No. 1 team in Class A. By the time the quarter was over, the Lady Patriots had an 18-2 lead. Trinity cut into the lead by holding Jackson Prep to six points in the second quarter, yet still trailed 24-14 at the half.
That 10-point margin would be as close as the Lady Saints would get, however, as once again the Lady Patriots took over the game in the second half.
Lauren Bane led Jackson Prep (16-4) with a game-high 18 points and Laura Lee Smith scored eight points. The Lady Patriots’ defense held Madelyn Cross and Bethany Ogden, Trinity’s top two leading scorers in check throughout the game.
Cross led the Lady Saints (13-7) with seven points and Ogden finished with six points.
Trinity Episcopal returns to MAIS District 6-A action next Tuesday when it hosts Tensas Academy.
