NATCHEZ — Two men reportedly fought over a shotgun when it accidentally fired on Daisy Street Saturday evening, a Natchez police report said.

The report said officers were called to 1223 Daisy St. at 8:45 p.m. after a disturbance involving a gun was reported to dispatchers.

An argument reportedly started between Robert O. Campbell, 40, 1037 N. Union St., and Joe R. Williams, 45, 1666 Daisy St., at Daisy Street Grocery.

Williams said in a statement Campbell called him a child molester at the grocery. He said he went to 1223 Daisy St. to hang out with friends and Campbell showed up at the house carrying a shotgun.

Campbell then reportedly discharged the gun beside Williams’ head, according to Williams.

Campbell said in a statement that both men were arguing in the grocery store parking lot when Williams pulled a knife on him and threatened to stab him.

Campbell said he walked to the house on Daisy Street where Williams was and accidentally discharged the shotgun when Williams tried to take the gun from him.

Williams said after the gun was fired, he knocked Campbell down.

Both men said Williams put the gun in his truck and drove away.

Police took custody of the shotgun and knife involved in the incident.

Neither man chose to press charges.
