NATCHEZ — With a single click of the mouse — or 10 — Natchez residents can help earn the city $50,000.

Readers Digest’s campaign “We hear you America,” is awarding more than $5 million in funds and promotional support to 100 towns and cities across the United States.

The campaign aims to promote things like tourism, civic works, job growth and economic development.

“However we can make our great American hometowns even better places to live,” a Readers Digest press release said.

Sally Durkin, media liaison of the Natchez Convention Center, said she created a profile for Natchez to receive votes — and potentially some major money — and it is up to residents compete for the big bucks.

Durkin said a single person can vote up to 10 times a day every day of the contest.

To vote, login at readersdigest.com and click on “We hear you America” promotional campaign in a banner on the right of the screen.

“I’ve already voted 10 times today,” Durkin said.

But residents must act fast, because only 17 days left to vote.

Each of the 100 towns chosen to receive money will receive editorial coverage in Reader’s Digest, which reaches 35 million people.

Natchez’s rank in the contest was in the 700s Friday night with the city receiving 132 votes. But it was a big improvement from Thursday, when the city’s rank was in the 2000s, Durkin said, so every vote makes a big difference.

“You could be the (town) on the front page of the local paper receiving the giant check, holding the copy of the magazine coverage of your town,” the release said.
