VIDALIA — Cathedral’s fast-pitch softball team continued its up-and-down play Friday afternoon at the Vidalia softball tournament.

After playing one of its best games of the season just 24 hours earlier in an 8-0 win at Vicksburg, the Lady Green Wave lost to the Block Lady Bears 5-1 in a six-inning contest.

Block’s Kayla Smith pitched a complete game and held Cathedral to just five hits while striking out three and walking just two batters. They also got seven hits off an injured Mollie Devening in the first two innings.

“Mollie had a strained muscle and couldn’t go,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said.

Ginny Daggett came on in relief of Devening for the final four innings. Daggett gave up three runs on just two hits.

Block led 5-0 before Cathedral finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Daggett had the only extra-base hit for either team in the game with a triple.

“We just didn’t come to play. I don’t know if we were tired from the trip to Vicksburg. We just played one of the worst games all year,” Blackwell said. “We just couldn’t get the hits going. We just had an off night.”

Cathedral (9-5) will take on LaSalle at 10 a.m. today.
