Cleveland Rice

NATCHEZ — Services for Cleveland “Poppa” Rice, 97, who died Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Daughters of Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. D.W. Howard officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Robert D. Mackel and Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and from noon until service time Sunday at the church.
Mr. Rice was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Good Samaritan St. Clare Lodge No. 23 and the Pearl Leaf Society.
Mr. Rice was a lifelong member of Daughters of Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Rice Jr. and Mary Sanders Rice; his wife, Rebecca “Becky” Rice; six siblings, Howard, Sylvester, Walter and Richard Rice, Odessa Fitzgerald and Augusta Rice; one daughter, Joyce Daniels; one son, Jim Deterly; and one grandson, Waldell Sanders.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie Nichols and wife, Fannie, of Houston, Texas and Robert Deterly and wife, Mary Ann, of Stone Mountain, S.C.; and four daughters, Audrey Rice and husband, Eddie, Marshall Clarks and Ethel Sanders, all of Natchez; and Carol Jones and husband, Jerry, of Wisner, La.; two sisters, Alma Fleming and Francis McKnight, both of Natchez; one godson, Kenneth Elery and wife, Penelope, of Canada; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
