NATCHEZ — The Natchez High School baseball team did not end its regular season on the right note Monday night at Chester-Willis Field.

The Bulldogs hosted Warren Central High School and lost 10-1. But, coach Charlie Williams was more disappointed in the way his team played than the fact they lost, especially with the playoffs starting Friday, he said.

“It’s the wrong time of year for us to play bad,” Williams said. “We (have) got to get re-focused.”

The Bulldogs committed nine errors in the behind starting pitcher Javon Washington in the game that led to five unearned runs for Warren Central.

“(The defense) tends to relax every time Javon pitches. (They think) he is supposed to strike everybody out, but they have to make plays,” Williams said.

Washington took the loss for Natchez. He went four innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Only one run was earned, and he struck out six.

Natchez High made matters worse with a poor night at the plate to go along with the nine errors.

Five Warren Central pitchers combined to give up only one hit to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs struck out six times.

Washington’s two-out triple in the bottom of the first was the only hit for Natchez.

Even with the lack of offense and poor defense, Natchez was able to keep the game close for five innings.

Warren Central took a 3-0 lead into the top of the sixth, but then they exploded for seven runs in the inning on four hits, four walks and three errors.

Beau Wallace led Warren Central at the plate. He went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple.

Devon Bell got the win for the Vikings.

Williams said he was pleased with the pitching performances he got from Washington and Derrian Johnson.

Johnson came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fifth and got a strikeout and a double play on a fly ball to get out of the inning with no runs scored.

He was hit pretty hard and walked four batters in the sixth inning. But, he recovered in the seventh inning and only faced four batters to put away the side.

Williams said the Bulldogs have a lot of work to do before they face Petal High School in the playoffs at 6 p.m. Friday.

Game one will be played in Petal and game two will be played at Chester-Willis Field at 2 p.m., Williams said. If necessary, game three will be at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season at 14-8 and 6-2 in Division 6-6A.
