FERRIDAY — Services for L.W. “Woodie” Davis, 93, of Ferriday, who died Friday, April 22, 2011, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Ferriday First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Gray officiating.
Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Comer Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Davis was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Jonesville, the son of Duncan Luther “Gee” Davis and Laura Renfrow Davis.
Woodie was mayor of Ferriday for 28 consecutive years and was a veteran of World War II for which he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Ferriday First Baptist Church, an active member of Ferriday Rotary Club, past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also president of Big Brake Hunting Club. He was an avid sportsman that loved the outdoors, but even more so, loved his family and the Town of Ferriday.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Vera Drane Davis; his parents; four brothers, John A. Davis, E.R. “Pete” Davis, Edward A. “Eddie” Davis, and Alton J. “Sambo” Davis; two sisters, Velma Poole Bankston and Marie Blunschi; and one granddaughter, Virginia Kathryn Crow.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Davis Crow and husband, Eddie, of Ferriday; two granddaughters, Natalie Schwager and husband, Dr. Keith Schwager, and Rebecca Herbst and husband, Mark; three great-granddaughters, Anna, Rose and Helen Schwager; two great-grandsons, Jackson Wilhelm and Wesley Davis Herbst, all of Baton Rouge; one sister, Mamie Simon of Jonesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Johnny Blunschi, Sam Blunschi, Mike Blunschi, Ricky Blunschi, Paul Blunschi and Woodie Blunschi.
