CENTREVILLE — The Centreville Academy baseball team survived a late Brookhaven Academy rally to win 3-2 Monday in the second round of the MAIS Class AA South State playoffs.
Tigers starter Hunter Devall cruised for six innings before letting up two runs in the top of the seventh. But Devall didn’t let Brookhaven Academy tie it up, and the Tigers (24-6) have a 1-0 lead in the series.
“Devall settled in and threw a great game for us,” Centreville coach Jason Horne said.
“They got some late hits with a double and a single, but Hunter was able to buckle down for us. He cruised along and got a little tired as his pitch count got up.”
Devall walked no batters and gave up two runs on six hits while striking out eight. Randy Bell led Centreville in hitting, going 3-for-3 with a double. Cliff Hurst and Tyler Towles also doubled for the Tigers.
“It was a team effort,” Horne said. “We always preach that, and the team came through tonight. We made some plays defensively and only had one error.”
Centreville will travel to Brookhaven Academy for game two at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
