NATCHEZ — Cathedral School faced a familiar foe Friday from its football season last fall in the second round of the MHSAA Class 1A playoffs.
Cathedral matched up against Mount Olive High School, and star athlete Ruben Duckworth was the starting pitcher for Game 1 Friday.
Duckworth ran for 326 yards against the Green Wave last fall in the two schools’ Oct. 1 matchup. Even though the Green Wave went on to win 22-21, Duckworth made his mark.
Cathedral made sure to return the favor Friday night, tallying 10 runs on 11 hits en route to a 10-0 win in five innings in Game 1.
“He’s beaten us once four years ago when he was a freshman, so he had me worried,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said after the game Friday.
“We were able to put the ball in play, and I’m pleased with how we put pressure on their defense. They had some trouble in the field (with six errors).”
Cathedral beat Mount Olive in Game 2 Saturday 17-3 in five innings, sweeping the Pirates to advance to the third round of the playoffs.
Cathedral will play in the third round of the playoffs Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, May 9.
Cathedral’s softball team also advanced another round in the postseason, tallying a 7-2 win against West Lincoln in Game 1 Friday and a 6-4 win in Game 2 Saturday.
The two victories make Cathedral 20-9-1 on the season, and the Lady Green Wave will play in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs May 5 and 7.
Trinity Episcopal
For the first time since 1990, the Trinity Episcopal baseball team will play in the MAIS Class A South State Championship series.
The Saints were able to beat Riverfield Academy 19-0 in Game 1 last Tuesday at home, then defeat the Raiders in Game 2 on the road 11-5 Thursday.
As the top-seeded team, Trinity will travel to Heidelberg for Game 1 Tuesday. The Saints will host Game 2 and, if necessary, Game 3 at home Friday night at the former Huntington School baseball field.
The Saints are currently 20-3 on the season.
