Alcorn softball upsets top-seeded Texas Southern in SWAC Tournament

The Alcorn State Lady Braves, set on defending their SWAC championship from last season, upset top-seeded Texas Southern of the West division, 4-0 Thursday in the first round of conference tournament championship play.
The Lady Braves played long ball in the contest, getting a second inning homerun from Bianca Armstrong and a third inning round tripper from Shawna Bruton.
The Lady Braves gave winning pitcher Deanna Rancilio insurance runs in the sixth, scoring twice. Kala Purry doubled in Armstrong and Jasmine Hall, who had walked and singled respectively. This was Hall’s first game back after a regular season-ending injury.
Rancilio went the distance, scattering six hits.
The Lady Braves are now 18-31 overall. Texas Southern dropped to 26-28,
Alcorn will meet arch-rival Jackson State Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 8-3.
