NATCHEZ — When Wilkinson County Christian’s softball team lost in the state playoffs this spring, it signaled the end of the careers of several young softball players.
That will not be the case for WCCA standout Bethany Fletcher.
Fletcher will sign her letter of intent to continue her softball career at LSU-Eunice today at WCCA in front of friends and family.
“(I chose LSU-Eunice) because I’ve always liked their program, and their coach (Andy Lee) is a really good coach and a nice guy,” Fletcher said. “They are actually ranked No. 1 in the nation right now.”
Although Fletcher was a pitcher at WCCA, she intends to play second base and outfield at LSU-Eunice, she said. Second base is a familiar spot for Fletcher because that is the position she has played in summer league since she was 10 years old.
Fletcher said that she is proud of winning the district championship two years in a row at WCCA, but she has more memories from summer ball because she has been playing that longer.
Last summer, her Louisiana Lady Hawks won the United States Specialty Sports Association softball championship in Orlando, Fla.
Fletcher said she was recruited by a few other schools, but decided on LSU-Eunice because of academics as well as athletics.
“It’s a really nice campus and they really focus on academics too,” Fletcher said. “I want to do physical therapy. I am going to major in biological science.”
Fletcher said she brings a great attitude to the LSU-Eunice softball team.
“I feel that I’m a really good team player, and I try my hardest at all times and give it my all. I never give up and do my best for our team,” she said.
Fletcher will be signing around 11:30 a.m. or noon today at WCCA, she said.
