NATCHEZ — The club tennis season is heating up at Duncan Park as summer draws near.

The Duncan Park tennis camps will begin June 6. Camps will be separated into three age groups. Children 10 and under, children 11-18 and adults will each have their own instructional camps.

The children 10 and under will have camp from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. two days a week. Parents will choose which two days the kids will come, said tennis director Henry Harris.

Adults can choose their camp days as well. The adult camps will be offered Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

There will also be camps for higher-level players that will compete it tournaments against places like Brookhaven and Vicksburg. Those players will consist primarily of junior high and high school players, Harris said. They will have camp from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Tennis is very important (to the Natchez community),” Harris said. “It gives kids something to do, gets them away from the house, gives them a little exercise and the main thing is it keeps them out of trouble.”

Harris said he thinks this year’s group of campers will be the largest he has had since starting the program in 2007.

“I think we’re going to have the largest camp ever, we had (approximately) 100 two years ago and I think it’s going to go past that (this year),” Harris said.

The registration fee is $65 for the camps and that includes a tee shirt and an end of the season party, Harris said.

Pushpendra Rajpurouit, a senior for Alcorn State’s tennis team, will be one of guest instructors this summer.

Harris said that the camps provide an opportunity for young players to see what competitive tennis is like before they decide if they want to play in junior high or high school.

The camp will run from June 6 to July 29 at the Duncan Park tennis courts.
