El Toro reaches perfection

NATCHEZ — El Toro finished a perfect season Tuesday night and was crowned as the Natchez Dixie Youth 9- and 10-year-old champion after pulling out a nail-bitting, 6-4 win over Dr. Bugg.
“It was the closest game we had all year,” El Toro coach David Lindsey said. “We were 11-0 coming in, and (Dr. Bugg’s) pitcher was shutting us down, but we managed to get a few runs in the bottom of the sixth (inning), and won.”
Lindsey’s son Tyler smacked the game winning, 2-RBI double in the bottom of the last inning to win the game. Tyler also was the winning pitcher for El Toro.
David said the grind of the long season and the thoughts of summer vacation might have led El Toro to under-perform a bit in the title game, but he was pleased with the way his team worked all season.
“They didn’t play as well as they have played before, but it’s late in the season and they are all getting ready for vacation,” he said. “But all season long they did what they were told in practice and worked hard, and it showed during the season.”
After being doused with the Gatorade cooler David told his team that a perfect record in baseball is a rare feat, he said.
“I told them, ‘Some of ya’ll might play ball all the way through high school and some into college, and there will not be many years you will have an undefeated season, so you will remember this one,’” he said.
David said his El Toro team featured a lot of talent to go along with its hard work.
“From the first day of practice I told them that with the team we had the coaches didn’t expect to lose a game,” David said. “We had a lot of talent, and (a lot) of all-stars from last year. (Through) the luck of the draft we got everybody we had and had a jam up team.”
Most of them already knew the fundamentals and those that didn’t learned (by the end of the season).”
El Toro’s Matthew Franklin added a double of his own to go with along with Tyler’s game-winning two-bagger.
Ben Foster had a double for Dr. Bugg and Clayton Devening added a triple.
David said he remembers his city championship with El Toro when he was a boy, and that makes this championship even sweeter.
“I won the city championship when I played on (El Toro) 30 years ago, and now it’s nice to coach my son and win it this year,” he said.
