NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Buddy Frank was shot in the leg at lunchtime today when he responded to the scene of a bank robbery at United Mississippi Bank on U.S. 61 South.
Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said Frank is doing well and should have a full recovery. The suspect in the robbery was also shot in the back and was transported to the hospital.
The suspect apparently robbed the bank, walking away with money. ACSO deputies who were eating lunch at Kentucky Fried Chicken next door walked outside when the incident occurred. Frank was shot, reportedly with a .22 caliber weapon, at that point, Mayfield said.
Deputies fired at the suspect who was running away. The suspect, who was near Natchez Ford, reportedly fired again, nearly missing a Natchez Ford employee. The bullet entered the car dealership’s office, ricocheting inside but not striking anyone.
A witness on the scene chased the suspect, eventually forcing him to stop behind Plantation Manor Apartments. Authorities arrived and the suspect was transported to the hospital.
UMB and KFC are now closed.
