NATCHEZ — Services for Herbert C. “Sonny” Moore, 79, of Natchez, who died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at his residence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dan Wynn officiating.

Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Moore was born Aug. 10, 1931, in Brookhaven, the son of Cecil Herbert Moore and Mildred Stewart Moore. He was Baptist.

Mr. Moore was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion. He retired as Natchez fire chief in 1989, after 33 years of service. In 1973, he along with two other firemen received the Carnegie Medal for saving a man’s life. He helped his wife, Betty Jo, with her Avon products business and enjoyed decorating their yard for Christmas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Johnnie Mae McClerkin Daniel; his father and mother-in-law, Joel H. Reese and Eunice Reese.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Jo Reese Moore; two sons, Joel C. Moore and wife, Linda, and Richard A. Moore and wife, Clara Jan; one sister, Mary Lou Pevey and husband, James; one brother, Clifton R. “Buddy” Moore and wife, Joan, all of Natchez; three sisters-in-law, Mary Holland and special friend, Richard Bloom, Peggy Huseman and husband, James, all of Natchez, and Linda Shirley and husband, Robert, of Vidalia; two brothers-in-law, Joel Leon Reese and wife, Cherrie, of Austin, Texas and Reese Riddle and wife, Helen, of Houston, Texas; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Mickey Lawrence, Ronnie Crowson, Whest Shirley, Bill Torrey, Joel Leon Reese and David Leach.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Natchez Fire Department and retired firemen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Natchez Fire Department Association or to a charity of choice.
