Vidalia — Catherine Cason needed some work done at her home on Azalea Drive in Vidalia. She called the Vidalia Sanitation Department and asked if they had any reliable workers to come out and give her a hand, she said. Chauncy Bell and Kerry Swift answered the bell, and they were at Cason’s house pressure washing and working in her garden when The Dart landed.

Bell lives in Vidalia and Swift is from Jonesville, both work for the sanitation department.

“When I see somebody that can’t (do the work) I’ll do work for them,” Bell said. “Anything they need somebody to help them out I’ll do it. I mean I’m not going to say no.”

Bell said one of his co-workers at the sanitation department told him Cason called and he asked Swift to come help him out.

They went to meet Cason after work and got to work pressure washing her siding and windows and taking the roots out of her garden so she could plant rose bushes, Swift said.

Bell, 34, said he has been doing odd jobs, like cutting trees and hauling furniture, for people in the neighborhood for a while.

“On my off time this is what I like to do,” he said.

Bell said he likes the work because it keeps him busy.

Swift said he likes to do similar work in Jonesville. Sometimes he and Bell receive a small payment for their services, but other times they do it for free, he said.

“Sometimes you get elderly people, and you try to help them out,” Swift said. “In some cases they can’t afford to pay for (the work).”

Swift, 40, said he and Bell got off work at 3 p.m. and headed straight to Cason’s house. After approximately three hours of work, they were wrapping up the job.
