VIDALIA — The Vidalia 13- and 14-year-olds team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to run-rule Blanchard 10-0 Friday afternoon to win the Louisiana Little League 13-14 state championship.
Head coach Greg Young said the team was on its way to Midland, Texas to compete in the regional tournament, which he said starts on Friday with an opponent to be determined.
“They did quite well. That’s an honor for them,” Young said. “First time ever for that age group to go that far. They’re a talented group of girls. They’ll be competitive with whoever they play.”
The game started late Thursday afternoon and Vidalia had a 6-0 lead after three innings before inclement weather forced the game to be completed nearly 24 hours later.
And Blanchard tried to hold its own against a good Vidalia team, but couldn’t get offense generated against Vidalia’s pitchers – and that included Cassie Gonzales and Karlee Woodruff on Friday.
Gonzales started the game for Vidalia while Woodruff pitched on Friday and was credit with the win.
